About the NC 10by10

The NC 10by10 Play Festival celebrates the talent and skill of North Carolina-based writers and actors.  Ten 10-minute plays submitted from across the state form the basis of an entertaining, thought-provoking evening of theater. The NC 10by10 is performed annually.

The festival is produced and funded by OdysseyStage Theater, a 501(c)(3) organization.

How are plays selected?

A three-stage process determines which plays are selected for the festival:

Submission: Each year, we issue a call for scripts from writers in the NC region. Anyone currently living in NC, including full-time college students, military personnel and residents, are encouraged to submit up to two scripts for production. We usually receive 80-100 scripts for initial review.

Review: During the call for scripts, and for three weeks afterwards, the scripts are evaluated by a panel of reviewers pulled from various disciplines within the NC performing arts community. The review team looks for writing quality, character development, feasibility of production and appropriateness of material to the NC audience. Each play is reviewed by three members of the panel. The 20 top-ranked plays (which may include 3-5 “wild cards” chosen by the producers) are then passed to the third stage.

Curation: The curation team is responsible for selecting the final 10 plays that make up the festival. This team consists of 1-3 recognized leaders in the NC theater and playwriting space. Final selection is based on more than just play quality – the curation team weighs diversity, play variety, theme and overall audience appeal to create “the show” that will be produced.
