The NC 10by10 Play Festival celebrates the talent and skill of North Carolina-based writers and actors. Ten 10-minute plays submitted from across the state form the basis of an entertaining, thought-provoking evening of theater. The NC 10by10 is performed annually.
The festival is produced and funded by OdysseyStage Theater, a 501(c)(3) organization.
How are plays selected?
A three-stage process determines which plays are selected for the festival:
Submission: Each year, we issue a call for scripts from writers in the NC region. Anyone currently living in NC, including full-time college students, military personnel and residents, are encouraged to submit up to two scripts for production. We usually receive 80-100 scripts for initial review.
Review: During the call for scripts, and for three weeks afterwards, the scripts are evaluated by a panel of reviewers pulled from various disciplines within the NC performing arts community. The review team looks for writing quality, character development, feasibility of production and appropriateness of material to the NC audience. Each play is reviewed by three members of the panel. The 20 top-ranked plays (which may include 3-5 “wild cards” chosen by the producers) are then passed to the third stage.
Curation: The curation team is responsible for selecting the final 10 plays that make up the festival. This team consists of 1-3 recognized leaders in the NC theater and playwriting space. Final selection is based on more than just play quality – the curation team weighs diversity, play variety, theme and overall audience appeal to create “the show” that will be produced.
John Paul Middlesworth (Producer/Artistic Director) has produced and directed numerous plays in North Carolina, and has served as festival producer for the past four years. He has been writing plays ever since his success with Johnny’s Christmas in Mrs.Lentz’s fifth-grade classroom. He’s had a number of 10-minute plays performed at Carrboro’s ArtsCenter with Playwrights’ Roundtable and 10 by 10 in The Triangle. In an even shorter format, he’s a past winner of PlaySlam both in Carrboro and Cary. He is an active performer as well, having worked with Deep Dish, RLT, Bare Theatre, OdysseyStage, and Durham Savoyards. Email: email@example.com .
Charles Machalicky (Producer/Managing Director) is pleased to be producing his first show for OdysseyStage, having assisted with their previous production of The Suffragist Project, and mixes a love of theater, dance and music into every facet of his life. A proud member of AEA, Charles began work as a performer in 1992 and expanded into producing, directing and choreographing in community and 99-seat theaters in Los Angeles. After productions of The Zoo Story and Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory (which he also adapted and directed), Charles detoured into technology and product development at several online startups in NYC. He moved to Raleigh in 2002 and resumed teaching and choreographing at North Carolina Dance Institute, and now develops and teaches courses in Arts Administration and the Business of Performing at William Peace University, drawing upon a wealth of experience in early-stage tech startups and an MBA from Duke University. Charles lives in Raleigh with his two amazing teenagers, two nervy cats and an enthusiastic Shiba Inu/Jack Russell mix. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org .
